DESCRIPTION:Our region is facing an emergency blood shortage across the Pacific Northwest. Nearly all blood types are dangerously low\, especially Type O blood and platelets that trauma and cancer patients depend on to survive. Right now\, there’s less than a one-day supply of Type O blood\, and donations haven’t kept pace with patient need. International Bach Competition held in Leipzig\, Germany\, interprets Johann SebastianBach\, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre and Louis Couperin with flutist Jeffrey Cohan. \n\n\n\nIrene Roldàn’s participation in these performances has been made possible with help from the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Seattle and from to the Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE) of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E)\, which seeks to promote Spanish culture through the inclusion of Spanish artists and creators residing in Spain in the programming of cultural events outside of Spain. \n\n\n\nABOUT IRENE ROLDÁN:Award-winning harpsichordist Irene Roldán was born in southern Spain in 1997. Described by the press as one of the most prominent Spanish harpsichordists on the international scene (ABC Sevilla)\, Irene currently lives and works in Basel\, Switzerland. She gained international recognition in 2021\, when she won first prize\, never previously awarded in this competition\, as well as the audience prize at the III. \n\n\n\nInternational Harpsichord Competition «Città di Milano». In the same year\, her ensemble Flor Galantesecured the first prize at the IV. International Bach Competition in Berlin. One year later\, Irene washonored with the prestigious Bach Prize and an additional special award at the XXXIII. International Bach Competition held in Leipzig\, Germany. \n\n\n\nIrene cultivated a profound passion for the harpsichord when she was 7 years old and has studied inSpain\, the Netherlands and Switzerland with Jacques Ogg\, Menno van Delft\, Andrea Marcon and JörgAndreas Bötticher. She currently works as a teaching assistant to Prof. Andrea Marcon and accompanist at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel\, Switzerland. \n\n\n\nShe has performed as a soloist at renowned festivals and venues in Europe and North America\, including the Utrecht Early Music Festival\, FEMÁS\, Urbino Musica Antica\, Fundación Juan March and Roma Festival Barocco. A sought-after ensemble musician\, Irene has collaborated with La CetraBarockorchester Basel and other prestigious ensembles\, such as the Venice Baroque Orchestra\,Kammerorchester Basel\, La Folia Barockorchester\, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla\, Syntagma Amici\, LaCentifolia\, Voces Suaves\, and Castello Consort\, among others. This lecture will be remote-only presented through Zoom. \n\n\n\nRepresentatives from the Government of Canada will be present to discuss current and upcoming vessel management measures to protect the Southern Resident killer whale population in Canadian waters. She supports the Pacific marine mammal hub to reduce fishery impacts to marine mammals\, including Southern Resident killer whales\, and Whalesafe Gear modifications nationally. As well\, her team lead the amendments to the Marine Mammal Regulations\, which proposes enhanced approach distances for Southern Resident killer whales in Canadian Pacific waters. \n\n\n\nEmma Giesbrecht is a Policy Analyst at Transport Canada\, and has worked on the Southern Resident killer whale file since 2019. Her team has developed annual measures to reduce physical and acoustic disturbance to the Southern Residents in Southern BC waters\, including the Vessel Restricted Zones\, Speed Restricted Zones\, increased approach distances and previously the whale watching authorization program

DESCRIPTION:San Juan County Department of Environmental Stewardship is hosting a series of hazardous waste round-up collection events this spring and summer\, giving island residents and businesses the chance to legally and responsibly dispose of poisonous\, flammable\, corrosive\, or otherwise hazardous materials. \n\n\n\nProper disposal protects community health\, keeps harmful chemicals out of local drinking water\, and safeguards the workers who handle these materials. \n\n\n\n“Hazardous materials including pesticides\, chemicals\, and batteries\, have no place in household garbage\,” said Katie Fleming\, Solid Waste Program Coordinator\, San Juan County Department of Environmental Stewardship. “When these items end up in the regular trash\, they can make their way onto our ferries\, where a spill or fire could put passengers\, crew\, and our marine environment at serious risk. These round-up events give households a safe\, free\, and easy alternative. Join the Salish Sea-wide Molt Blitz on June 26 to contribute to the largest single-day dataset of crab molts collected in our state. \n\n\n\nLearn more about green crab and efforts to mitigate their effects on the WSG Crab Team website. \n\n\n\nNeed to learn how to Molt Search? Join our virtual training June 24 at noon or find a staffed beach day-of! \n\n\n\nWhat is a molt?\n\n\n\nA red rock crab (Cancer productus) molt\, with blue dots indicating the carapace spines. The number of spines can help to identify the crab species.\n\n\n\nIn order to get bigger\, a crab must shed its exoskeleton and grow a new\, larger one. This shed outer shell is called a molt. Because molts retain species-identifying features like the shape and number of spines\, they can be used to learn more about the diversity of crabs and other arthropods on a beach. \n\n\n\nIt can be unsettling when many molts appear on the beach. Because they retain their rigid shape and distinct features\, they may be mistaken for dead crabs. In fact\, because crabs must be alive to exit their old exoskeletons and successfully molt\, crab molts can be used as a sign of a growing population.  \n\n\n\nWhat is Molt Search?\n\n\n\nLed by Washington Sea Grant Crab Team and Washington State University Extension\, Molt Search is a community science program empowering volunteers to monitor their local shorelines for invasive European green crab – using crab molts. Molt Searchers also document data on important native crab species like Dungeness crab. As a result\, Molt Search data serves not only as an early alert system for green crab\, but also as an indicator of native crab species health. \n\n\n\nGreen crab are tenacious predators tolerant of a wide variety of conditions. Their adaptability means they can outcompete native Dungeness crab and other species for habitat and prey. Discovering the presence of green crab early helps state managers quickly take action to reduce their spread.  \n\n\n\nWhy Molt Blitz?\n\n\n\nSince 2024\, Molt Search has hosted an annual Molt Blitz to encourage new participants to join the hunt for green crab.
