DESCRIPTION:Our region is facing an emergency blood shortage across the Pacific Northwest. Nearly all blood types are dangerously low\, especially Type O blood and platelets that trauma and cancer patients depend on to survive. Right now\, there’s less than a one-day supply of Type O blood\, and donations haven’t kept pace with patient need. Always the first full weekend in June\, the Studio Tour takes attendees on an adventure\, leading them off the beaten tourist path\, weaving through back roads to remote pockets of the island. While visitors will surely come across the many popular island destinations along the way\, the Studio Tour offers a rare opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the island\, discover the artwork it inspires and meet the artists behind the art.  \n\n\n\nThe Studio Tour is the perfect way to experience all the island has to offer before the peak summer season begins. Artist studios are often unique and quirky\, ranging from small home studios to large shared\, coworking spaces and everything in between – small outbuildings\, outdoor kilns\, large historic barns and repurposed industrial spaces that provide communal access to tools and equipment. Many host studios will also feature guest artists\, offering a rare opportunity to experience multiple artistic voices at the same time.  \n\n\n\nFounded in 1991\, the studio tour was created by island artists who wanted to open their studios for one special weekend each year – offering the public glimpses into their workspaces and artistic lives to connect with the creative process firsthand. In late 2024\, the artists officially formed San Juan Island Artists\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. While the Studio Tour remains our primary focus\, this milestone supports the continued growth and future impact of the island’s artistic community. \n\n\n\nThis year the tour features 68 participating island artists & 26 Studio stops on the map\, making it one of the most extensive tours to date! DESCRIPTION:Irene Roldán\n\n\n\nJune 6  | 12:30 PM | St. David’s Episcopal Church  | 780 Park Street |  Friday Harbor |San Juan Island.  \n\n\n\nJeffrey Cohan\n\n\n\nSpanish harpsichordist Irene Roldán from Basel\, Switzerland and baroque flutist Jeffrey Cohan present“Bach & Jacquet”\, a program celebrating Johann Sebastian Bach and French composers whoseinfluence he benefited from\, including Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre\, Louis Couperin and PancraceRoyer\, in the seventh 2026 Salish Sea Early Music Festival program. \n\n\n\nBorn 20 years before Johann Sebastian Bach and a favorite composer of Louis XIV\, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre made many important innovations in her compositions both for solo keyboard and in thedevelopment of the cantata\, all the while juxtaposing and integrating the distinct French and Italian styles\, all of which set the stage for compositional techniques and forms that Bach was later to use extensively and develop further.  \n\n\n\nThe program will include the sonatas in E Major and G Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach as well as heperformers’ transcription for flute of Bach’s violin sonata in C Minor\, a Sonata in D Major by Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre and harpsichord solos including Jacquet de La Guerre’s Prélude in D Minor\, La Zaïde by Pancrace Royer\, and the Suite in F Major by Louis Couperin. \n\n\n\nThis concert\, presented in collaboration with St. David’s Episcopal Church\, takes place on Saturday\, June 6 at 12:30 PM at St. David’s Episcopal Church at 780 Park Street in Friday Harbor onSan Juan Island.  \n\n\n\nAdmission is by a suggested donation (a free will offering) of $20 to $30. For additional information please seewww.salishseafestival.org/sanjuan. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT IRENE ROLDÁN:Award-winning harpsichordist Irene Roldán was born in southern Spain in 1997. Described by the press as one of the most prominent Spanish harpsichordists on the international scene (ABC Sevilla)\, Irene currently lives and works in Basel\, Switzerland. She gained international recognition in 2021\, when she won first prize\, never previously awarded in this competition\, as well as the audience prize at the III. \n\n\n\nInternational Harpsichord Competition «Città di Milano». In the same year\, her ensemble Flor Galantesecured the first prize at the IV. International Bach Competition in Berlin. One year later\, Irene washonored with the prestigious Bach Prize and an additional special award at the XXXIII. International Bach Competition held in Leipzig\, Germany. \n\n\n\nIrene cultivated a profound passion for the harpsichord when she was 7 years old and has studied inSpain\, the Netherlands and Switzerland with Jacques Ogg\, Menno van Delft\, Andrea Marcon and JörgAndreas Bötticher. She currently works as a teaching assistant to Prof. Andrea Marcon and accompanist at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel\, Switzerland. \n\n\n\nShe has performed as a soloist at renowned festivals and venues in Europe and North America\, including the Utrecht Early Music Festival\, FEMÁS\, Urbino Musica Antica\, Fundación Juan March and Roma Festival Barocco. A sought-after ensemble musician\, Irene has collaborated with La CetraBarockorchester Basel and other prestigious ensembles\, such as the Venice Baroque Orchestra\,Kammerorchester Basel\, La Folia Barockorchester\, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla\, Syntagma Amici\, LaCentifolia\, Voces Suaves\, and Castello Consort\, among others. Irene’s enthusiasm for opera led her toserve as Andrea Marcon’s musical assistant for a 2024 production of Handel’s Alcina at Teatro de laMaestranza in Sevilla. \n\n\n\nIrene is dedicated to researching and reviving Spanish music from the 16th to 18th centuries\, with a focus on Francisco Correa de Arauxo and the works of Domenico Scarlatti and his contemporaries. DESCRIPTION:June 9 | 6 pm | The Whale Museum | Friday Harbor \n\n\n\nThe Whale Museum is excited to kick off its 2026 Summer Lecture Series lineup with the lecture “Eelgrass Restoration through Youth Conservation” given by Mike Rosekrans and Sage Enright with the Youth Conservation Corps. This free presentation is scheduled for 6 PM on June 9 in-person at The Whale Museum and streaming on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/live/dEL7qcNzrO4 \n\n\n\nEelgrass plays a vital role in the Salish Sea providing critical species habitat\, preventing coastal erosion\, improving water quality\, and contributing to shellfish and human health by reducing pathogens in seawater. While the San Juan Islands historically had robust eelgrass meadows\, the islands have recently experienced alarming local declines\, with near-total losses in some areas. the San Juan Islands Conservation District (SJICD) YCC programs leads seed-based eelgrass restoration efforts\, which focus on collecting eelgrass seeds from natural meadows and planting them in priority restoration sites. Learn about the efforts our YCC crew members are engaged with and how our local youth are contributing to a healthier marine ecosystem. \n\n\n\nMike joined the District in the Spring of 2023 as the Youth Conservation Corps Program Co-Coordinator. Mike has spent his career engaging youth in environmental education programs\, developing curriculum for educational institutions\, and mentoring aspiring outdoor leaders and educators. Mike earned his M.Ed from Western Washington University in partnership with North Cascades Institute in 2016 with a focus on nonprofit administration and environmental education. \n\n\n\nSage joined the District as Eelgrass Project Assistant after serving on the Islands Conservation Corps (ICC) since 2022. They hold a B.S. degree in Geology and a minor in Computer Science from Western Washington University where they are working toward a M.A. in Environmental Studies. With hands on experience in land-based restoration through ICC\, and marine research and restoration experience in partnership with University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs\, Sage is captivated by\, and committed to\, local conservation efforts. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of The Whale Museum’s Summer Lecture Series\, a series of talks throughout the summer! Composed by Igor Stravinsky\, this ballet premiered in 1910 and is based on Russian folklore. The ballet features a blend of magical elements and themes of bravery and redemption.Join a princess on her quest to find the mythical golden apple tree in an enchanted garden. She discovers the tree in the evil sorcerer Kaschei’s garden and meets the magical Firebird\, who gifts her a feather for help in danger. While befriending cursed maidens who dance with golden apples\, the princess faces Kastchei in a duel. Using the feather\, she summons the Firebird\, who reveals the location of Kastchei’s immortal soul in a golden egg. This exhibition explores how artistic vision is passed through generations\, highlighting how three family members shaped and responded to their times while pursuing their art.  \n\n\n\nMagnolia Blossom- 1925 by Imogen Cunningham\n\n\n\nA Family of Artists \n\n\n\nPave It and Paint It Green\, Yosemite National Park\, circa 1965 by Rondal Partridge\n\n\n\nImogen Cunningham (1883-1976)\, was a pioneer of American modernist photography and founding member of Group f/64\, the 1930s collective of West Coast Photographers. Known for her iconic botanical images and portraits of artists. She captured stunning images of Frida Kahlo\, Ansel Adams\, Edward Weston and many others. \n\n\n\nRoi Partridge (1888-1984)\, Imogen’s husband\, became a renowned etcher\, who taught at Mills College\, and never stopped documenting his vanishing and cherished California landscapes. \n\n\n\nRondal Partridge (1917-2015) Imogen and Roi’s son\, learned from masters like Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams\, ultimately spending eight decades photographing people\, nature\, and social change. \n\n\n\nA Retrospective Spanning Over 100 Years \n\n\n\nWith nearly 110 years of combined work\, this exhibition features masterworks and rare pieces\, illuminating how these artists both collaborated and forged their own paths. \n\n\n\nFeaturing over 100 photographs and prints from the remarkably long careers of these artists\, the work is curated from their personal archives. This groundbreaking exhibition tells an intimate story: how artistic vision travels across generations\, how family members see the same world with different eyes and how three artists kept their creative spark alive while making a living as artists. At the age of twelve\, receiving an exotic feather sparked his interest in using feathers as a medium for his creative expression and launched his lifelong passion for transforming them into art. \n\n\n\nChris Maynard_Piercing the Veil feather 18×12\n\n\n\nProcess and Philosophy \n\n\n\nToday\, Maynard carves feathers into intricate art—cutting them into detailed shapes and arranging the cutouts into scenes that celebrate the life and flight of birds. Maynard states\, “I don’t trim or flatten the feathers but keep their natural curves and shapes by elevating them from the background. By honoring the feathers in this way\, I feel they have reciprocated by enhancing my work with their shadows. So\, each piece changes according to the intensity and angle of the light that shines on it. My work highlights the patterns and colors of the feathers themselves\, inviting the viewer to look and look again.” \n\n\n\nEthical Sourcing and Presentation \n\n\n\nFeathers from a variety of birds—including turkeys\, parrots\, and peacocks—are used to create scenes displayed in Maynard’s acclaimed shadow boxes. A conservationist at heart\, his feathers are legally sourced. Many of the feathers are naturally shed\, obtained from farms\, aviaries and zoos. \n\n\n\nSymbolism and Impact \n\n\n\nFeathers are universal symbols of flight\, transformation\, achievement\, and hope. Growing up on Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington state\, he draws inspiration from his natural surroundings\, shaping a body of work that is almost entirely rooted in the marine ecosystem. \n\n\n\nArtistic Process and Purpose\n\n\n\nSkyriver explains\, “I focus on recreating the essence of aquatic life by mimicking the movement and fluidity that define creatures in water. The transformation from molten material to finished piece allows me to capture the sensation of a fish or whale gliding effortlessly through its natural habitat.” Working in glass also allows him to reflect the transparency and translucency found in the marine world. \n\n\n\nFrom seashells to squid\, Raven’s work enhances viewers’ understanding of marine inhabitants. Through his art\, he encourages people to pay attention to the delicate balance of nature—an equilibrium that is often overlooked or taken for granted. \n\n\n\nTraining and Artistic Development\n\n\n\nBorn in 1982\, Raven was mentored by Lark Dalton\, who taught him how to build glass-blowing equipment and trained him in the traditional Venetian technique. He attended Pilchuck Glass School and continued his mentorship from renowned glass artists\, such as Lino Tagliapietra. In 2003\, Raven joined the William Morris team\, working with them until Morris’s retirement in 2007. This pivotal experience solidified his commitment to glass sculpting and teaching as his life’s work. \n\n\n\nInternational Recognition\n\n\n\nSince then\, Raven has established his own glass studio and traveled extensively—from Japan to Norway\, Italy\, Denmark\, and Turkey—where he teaches\, gives demonstrations\, and continues to develop his artistry as an artist in residence. His glass sculptures have been showcased internationally in both solo and group exhibitions\, earning him worldwide recognition.

This lecture will be remote-only presented through Zoom. \n\n\n\nRepresentatives from the Government of Canada will be present to discuss current and upcoming vessel management measures to protect the Southern Resident killer whale population in Canadian waters. She supports the Pacific marine mammal hub to reduce fishery impacts to marine mammals\, including Southern Resident killer whales\, and Whalesafe Gear modifications nationally. As well\, her team lead the amendments to the Marine Mammal Regulations\, which proposes enhanced approach distances for Southern Resident killer whales in Canadian Pacific waters. \n\n\n\nEmma Giesbrecht is a Policy Analyst at Transport Canada\, and has worked on the Southern Resident killer whale file since 2019. Her team has developed annual measures to reduce physical and acoustic disturbance to the Southern Residents in Southern BC waters\, including the Vessel Restricted Zones\, Speed Restricted Zones\, increased approach distances and previously the whale watching authorization program

DESCRIPTION:Join your friends and neighbors at Lime Kiln Point State Park on Saturday\, June 20 at 7 PM for Orca Sing 2026! Bring your friends\, family\, and a picnic to enjoy the beauty of the park and the Salish Seawhile listening to thoughtful speeches and local musicians. First Nations naturalists Odin Lonning and Orca Annie will offer Indigenous perspective on the endangered Southern Resident killer whales. Fred West will play instrumental music and say a few wordsabout the origins of Orca Sing\, and author Marcia Henton Davis will also speak about the Incredible story of Tokitae. \n\n\n\nThe event will feature musical performances from opera singers Sarah Boden and Eleanor Bennett-White! Local Americana duo The Crazy Chesters\, will also be performing! Tours of the historic Lime Kiln lighthouse will be offered before and after the performance.Shuttle transportation is available through San Juan Transit for $10. Pick-up is at 6:30 PM in front of The Whale Museum. Return trips from Lime Kiln are at 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM. A Discover Pass is required to park in the State Park lot. \n\n\n\nOrca Sing 2026 is the result of a partnership of a number of organizations: Alchemy Art Center\, American Cetacean Society\, Friends of Lime Kiln Society\, Friends of the San Juans\, Oceana\, PKOLS\, Salish Wildlife Rescue\, San Juan Transit\, The Madrona Institute\, The Salish Sea School\, The Whale Museum\, and Washington State Parks.

DESCRIPTION:June 21 | 7  to 9 pm  | San Juan Island Grange Hall | Free \n\n\n\nThe Stewardship Network of the San Juans continues the Orca Action Month Film Series with a free double bill at The Grange — Sunday\, June 21 at 7 PM.  \n\n\n\nLime Kiln Point State Park and the Killer Whales celebrates the iconic relationship between Lime Kiln Point and the Southern Resident orcas that return to its waters every season\, while Resident Orca (2024\, 97 min.) chronicles the decades-long fight to free Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut — captured in the 1970 Penn Cove mass capture and held for over 53 years in what was widely described as the smallest killer whale tank in North America — reframing the story not as animal rights but as inherent Indigenous rights\, with the Lummi Nation at its heart. \n\n\n\n Q&A to follow with Marcia Henton Davis\, Tokitae’s trainer and caretaker at the Miami Seaquarium from 1987 to 1995.
