It is our community\, our unique history and our culture thatvisitors come to San Juan Island to experience. We challenge each parade applicant to think about how theycan amp it up and engage with the crowd.-How can you innovate\, create and tell your story?-Remember\, our community consists of people of all ages and cultures \n\n\n\n\nhow will your parade entry speak to them all?To honor your work\, this year we will be giving awards in the following categories: $600 Best use of THEME – Float $400 Best use of THEME – Non-Float $300 Best use of THEME – Children/Youth $300 Judges Special Choice $200 In honor of plastic free Salish Sea-≥float that has reused the most plastic on their entry $200 Best Animal/Animal Group $100 Best VehicleCATEGORIES & APPLICATION FEESSAFETY IS ALWAYS A PRIORITY DURING THE PARADE:It is mandatory that each parade entrant identify a safety monitor who will be required to walk alongside theentry and help keep the pace of the parade and ensure the safety of spectators. Safety monitors must be 18years of age or older. For larger entries we suggest 2 safety monitors. This position will be the main contactperson for your entry\, who is expected to communicate the parade information to your entry participants andto supervise the smooth and efficient operation of the parade from the staging/lineup area\, through theparade route. Know the parade rules for your entry and ensure compliance. The entry’s monitor is to beavailable to parade officials for relaying information to your entry in the staging area and along the paraderoute. Make sure the entry number\, which is given at registration on the day of the event\, is to be properlyplaced on your entry in the front right corner. Keep your entry together and organized in the staging area.Accompany your entry during the parade. Control entry speed on the parade route to maintain a 20-30 footinterval between your entry and units before and after. If a gap develops\, safely close it up. Ensure the safetyof your entry and entry participants. Be safe!****A representative for your entry will be signing the liability waiver for your group.CONSTRUCTION AND SAFETYAll entries must be constructed in a manner that ensures they are safe to operate and will not present a safetyconcern to other participants and spectators. The Parade Committee may remove an entry for safetyconsiderations at any time including\, but not limited to\, during the staging of floats.OPERATION:Only persons with valid driver’s licenses are permitted to operate or assist in the operation of motorizedvehicles. All non-motorized entries (foot traffic\, bikes\, wagons\, etc.) must be under control at all times andable to keep up with the pace of the parade. Weaving\, swerving and irresponsible driving are strictlyprohibited.SAFETY REGULATIONS:\n\n\n\n\n\nAll motorized vehicles must have working brakes. Brake checks must be administered prior to the paradestart.\n\n\n\nNothing may be thrown from the entries. Candy and flags are acceptable to be handed out\, just notthrown. No paper or advertisements are to be handed out.\n\n\n\nAlcohol is strictly prohibited on all entries.\n\n\n\nParticipants are to be respectful of spectators.\n\n\n\nChildren must be supervised by an adult at all times.\n\n\n\nIf your float/entry includes animals\, you must make arrangements to clean up all animal droppings as youproceed along the parade route. Droppings left on the road are a hazard for following floats/entries. DESCRIPTION:July 15 | 6:30 to 8:15 pm | San Juan Historical Museum |  405 Price St. | Friday Harbor \n\n\n\nSince forming his first band in 2014\,  Joel Astley quickly established himself as a world-class bandleader\, harmonica player\, singer\, songwriter\, and entertainer. In the past year he has been on a meteoric rise on the international Blues Music scene\, joining Lee Oskar Harmonicas as a featured artist in 2023 and signing with Blue Heart Records to release his first album\, Seattle to Greaseland. The album debuted August 18\, 2023 at Number 7 on the Blues Billboard Top Ten\, and met critical acclaim worldwide. He has since received the Silver Medal Award from the Global Music Awards\, Honorable Mention in the 2024 International Songwriting Competition for his song Secondhand Kid\, and currently nominated for four 2024 Josie Awards\, two 2024 Independent Blues Awards\, and two 2024 Blues Blast Music Awards. \n\n\n\nHe has a strong Pacific Northwest following\, and has collected 23 Washington Blues Society’s “Best of the Blues” Awards in just seven years. Besides festival appearances and tours dates\, he still plays local venues year round and does session recording work; he has appeared on multiple recordings\, and is currently working on songs for his next album. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIsland Rec’s free outdoor summer concert series kicked off at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday\, July 8.  This year we are bringing you an assortment of the most requested bands of 2025.
