Explore at your own pace and chat with SJPT’s Ellis Preserve Curator/Caretaker\, Ruthie Dougherty\, about the people who lived here and the conservation legacy we’ve inherited. \n\n\n\nThis open house is part of statewide Washington Museum Day\, a day when museums and historic sites across Washington open their doors to connect communities with local history. \n\n\n\nThe History\n\n\n\nAt the heart of the 344-acre Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve stands the home of early settler Theodore Tharald. Built in 1883 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, this original log house stands as an example of the skill and hard work required to build a life in the islands in the mid-nineteenth century. \n\n\n\nThe San Juan Preservation Trust is pleased to share what we know of a long and rich history of connection to place\, industriousness\, and the ultimate gift of an extraordinary conservation legacy. \n\n\n\nGetting There\n\n\n\n842 Hoffman Cove Road\, Shaw Island\, 98286 \n\n\n\n\nFrom the Shaw ferry landing\, follow Blind Bay Rd as it curves right around the bay.\n\n\n\nContinue straight to the intersection of Blind Bay Rd and Hoffman Cove Rd (approx. 2.3 miles from the ferry).\n\n\n\nTurn left and proceed 0.8 miles.\n\n\n\nLook for the preserve gate and driveway on your right.
